  1. Multimedia Michigan Macintosh Readme

  3. In order to use this CD-ROM to its fullest potential two crucial pieces of software are included that need to be installed. 
  4.  
  5. 1. Web Browser
  6. The content on this CD-ROM is navigated using a Web Browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
  7.  
  8. 2. Adobe Acrobat Reader
  9. Used to view "Portable Document Format" (PDF) files.  PDF files allow for advanced layout, multimedia, and navigation options cross-platform.

  11. Before installing Adobe Acrobat Reader  a Web Browser must be installed.  Once a Web Browser has been installed it will be possible to view additional help pages included on this CD-ROM.

Both Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer are included on this CD-ROM.  There are different versions of each browser to accommodate different levels of users and computer systems.  Determine which Web Browser is appropriate by reading the requirements for each version prior to installation.

  19. Browser Installation
  20. To install any of the Web Browsers provided:
  21. 1. Open the "software" folder found on the top level of this CD-ROM.
  22. 2. Open the "macintosh" directory.
  23. 3. Open either the "netscape" (for Netscape Navigator) or "msie " (for Microsoft Internet Explorer) folder.
  24. 4. Double-click on the file name of the appropriate browser (file names are italicized in quotation marks below) or follow instructions where applicable.

  27. Netscape Navigator for Macintosh:

  29. Netscape Navigator 3.01
  30. "netscape3.01"

  32. This browser is recommended for anyone who would like to run Netscape on a MacOS system.

  34. Requirements:
  35. Ñ Minimum of 4.8 MB to download the attachment.
  36. Ñ 16 MB or greater of free application RAM.
  37. Ñ MacOS System 7.5 or newer, 7.5.3.
  38. Ñ Screen size of at least 14".

  41. Netscape Navigator 4.03

  43. This is Netscape's most advanced browser to date.  It offers support for channels, dynamic HTML, and comes bundled with an entire suite of Internet utilities.  This browser is recommended for advanced users only.

  45. PowerPC Systems
  46. 1. Open the  "Installer_PPC_Export" folder.
  47. 2. Open the "Netscape Installer" folder.
  48. 3. Double-click "Netscape Installer".
  49. 4. Follow on-screen instructions.

  52. 1. Open the "Installer_68K_Export" folder.
  53. 2. Open the "Netscape Installer" folder.
  54. 3. Double-click "Netscape Installer".

  58. Ñ Additional 3.8 MB for full installation.
  59. Ñ 16 MB or greater of free application RAM.

  65. "IE 4.0 Active Setup Installer"

  67. Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 is a highly advanced web browser allowing for channels, Dynamic HTML, fast performance, and is part of a tightly integrated suite of internet applications.

  71. ÑMacintosh PowerPC processor for PowerPC install, Macintosh 6830 processor or higher for 68K install, Macintosh 68030 processor or higher for FAT Binary install
  72. Ñ MacOS 7.1 and above
  73. Ñ 8 MB minimum RAM with Virtual Memory on, 12 MB recommended,    9.1 MB for PowerPC minimum installation
  74. Ñ 20-40 MB Hard Disk space (depending upon what options are selected).

  77. Adobe Acrobat Reader

  79. Adobe Acrobat Reader is necessary for viewing PDF files.  To install:

  81. 1. Open the "software" folder found on the top-level of this CD-ROM.
  82. 2. Open the "macintosh" folder.
  83. 3. Open the "acrobat" folder.
  84. 4. Open the "Reader+Search" folder.
  85. 5. Open the "Reader" folder.
  86. 6. Double-click "Reader 3.01 Installer". 
  87. 7. Follow on-screen instructions.

  89. Requirements:
  90. Ñ Macintosh computer with 68020 (Macintosh II series) or greater processor (including all Power Macintosh computers). 
  91. Ñ MacOS 7.0 or later.
  92. Ñ 3300 KB application RAM for 680x0-based Macintosh or Power Macintosh with Virtual Memory turned on; 5227 KB for Power Macintosh with Virtual Memory turned off.
  93. Ñ 8 MB hard disk space, plus 4.4 MB additional temporary disk space available
  94. during installation. 
  95. Ñ For viewing PDF files inside a Web browser, Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later (3.0.1 or later recommended).

You may also be able to use other Web browsers that fully support the Netscape APIs.  (Netscape Navigator 2.0.2 can also be used with limitations; e.g., it will not allow you to submit a PDF form, and operations such as printing PDF files from within Netscape Navigator 2.0.2 can crash your Mac.)

  99. ** A computer with 16MB of RAM is recommended to fully utilize the features of Adobe Reader 3.01 while used simultaneously with a web browser. **

  101. This will also install a plug-in for Netscape or Internet Explorer .  This plug-in will allow for viewing PDFs from within the browser.
